Required and Suggested Gear
- Each participant is required to carry: water bottle or bladder,
identification.
- Each participant in the bicycle division must wear a helmet while
cycling, scootering, or skating. Bicycles in 7 and 16 hour divisions
must be equipped with a functional headlight and taillight or rear reflector.
A flashing taillight is allowed.
- Each cyclist is advised to bring a bike lock.
Some checkpoints can only be approached on foot, requiring you to either
leave your bike or carry it with you. (However, it is allowable to
leave one teammate with the bikes while the others approach the
checkpoint.)
- Each team is required to carry: compass, pencil or waterproof pen,
timepiece.
- For after dark, the following are strongly recommended:
a flashlight or headlamp (some questions will be difficult
to answer at night without a light), reflective apparel.
- You may wish to carry: backpack or waist pack,
food, sports beverage, money, extra pencils and pens, a magnifier for
reading the map, sunscreen, sunglasses,
a sun hat, a change of socks, a layer for cooler night weather, a cell phone for safety.
- All participants will be provided with a map (consisting of two or
three 11"x17" sheets
of paper), a question sheet (a two-sided legal size sheet
of paper), and a plastic map case.
-
All 7-hour and 16-hour participants will be required to tie
a day-glo bandanna (either the event bandanna if you purchase one,
a previous year's bandana,
or a loaner bandanna we will provide)
onto their gear or person in a visible
manner.
Because we do not have enough loaner bandanas for all, 3-hour
participants will be encouraged to wear a Street Scramble safety
vest instead.
- You may wish to bring colored pens, highlighters, and measuring
devices such as a map board, string, pins, and rulers, to aid in route
planning. These are merely suggestions; it is easy to get along without
any of these items.
