Heidi and I have developed a strategy for the Night & Day events where we do a 4-5 hr day loop carrying only a water bottle and a few energy bars. We travel light and move fast, walking only the uphills. We then come back to the event center where we spend an hour or so eating dinner (real food- in this case sandwiches) before beginning a night loop with warm clothing, headlamps, and other items in a backpack. We walked most of the night loop and jogged a few downhills.

Things went mostly as planned at this event. We decided to get the timed points (12,15,52) before they expired and then head south to San Bruno mtn and back for the first loop. We knew it was a stretch to get the one at the top (107) but figured it was worth it to get 101 and 87 even if we skipped 107. When we got to 101, the wind was really blowing and we were freezing (with no jacket to put on) and we could tell the loop was going to take more than 5hrs so we skipped 107 and finished the first loop in 4.5 hrs.

While eating dinner, we adjusted our route for the 2nd loop to give us better options if we had to come in early and to shorten the distance as it seemed to be a bit of stretch to get the planned checkpoints. We decided to cut out 83 and 44 and save 42 and 65 for later in the loop. Things went pretty well during this loop with the only deviation made during the revised route was to get 48 in the Presidio instead of 58 on the way between 32 and 61 as it appeared to be a lot easier route and only cost us 10 pts. At the end of the loop, we decided to come straight in after 66. We probably had to time to get 85 (and possibly 41) but we were really tired and just wanted to be done.

What's interesting about our score is that it was identical to our score at last year's Seattle event in about the same time and our distance was 0.1 mile longer than Seattle (which was measured using a different program so for all intents and purposes is equal). What's even more interesting is that in both events our points per mile was were almost identical to our total miles. Also, at the Bellevue Street Scramble we just did last week, we had 43.5 pts/mi (740 pts in 3 hrs). I've decided to call the number 43.5 the "Night and Day constant" with Greek symbol sigma. Therefore, our points per mile = sigma and our total points = sigma squared. Our overall pace is very close to pi mph so our points per hour is sigma * pi.
