This was the year for disagreeable Night & Day weather. Although
the weekend of July 21-22 is historically one of the dryest of the year,
rain began shortly after the start and continued until about an hour after
the 16-hour finish! This, our eight Night & Day Challenge race, was the
first where
it rained and also the first where we had an outdoor
event center :-(
Nevertheless, teams reported having a fabulous time as usual,
and many winning teams stayed around for results and awards
at each finish.
Seventy-eight teams participated. Bob Reddick, the course designer,
placed nearly all checkpoints at cul-de-sacs, road ends, or T-intersections.
Most had an escape route for those on foot or bike. The course was more
compact and had fewer checkpoints than in previous years. Bob tried to
make the course "cleanable" by a strong 16-hour foot team. No foot team
approached that achievement, but one bike team, Enger Management,
earned the maximum 3000 points,
and another bike team, Time Bandits, visited all but
two 30-point CPs, scoring 2940. Seven-hour team Wanna Be Sedated (John Zobel) achieved
the highest score on foot in the entire event (1625), outscoring all 16-hour
foot teams and all 16-hour and 7-hour duathlon teams.
Another impressive result was Teriyaki Donut's (Greg Barnes) score of 2740 in
only 7 hours on bike.
Congratulations
to the Blue Whoam-man Group, the highest achieving women's team
in the entire event, with 920 points earned in 7 hours on foot.
3-hour women's team Cipro Slackin (Elizabeth Walkup) also scored impressively
on foot with 435 points,
Many thanks to Bob for course design, to Seattle Running Company
and lululemon athletica for prizes, to Gookinaid Hydralyte for our
electrolyte drink, and to all the volunteers who worked on or before
event day, many of whom helped at the finish line immediately after
crossing the finish line themselves.
Thanks also to our registrar, Lyn Smith, and to Patrick Nuss for results
formatting.
Below are the final results as posted August 7.
If you missed the award ceremony and would like your ribbons,
and/or if you would like your question sheet returned to you,
send a stamped, self-addressed envelope to SND results, Meridian Geographics,
